356 – The Articles of Faith Concerning the Holy Spirit

CHURCH COVENANT AND ARTICLES OF FAITH – ARTICLES OF FAITH CONCERNING THE HOLY SPIRIT

Read: John 15:26-27

INTRODUCTION:

1. In no area exists less information, more mis-information.
2. It ranges from no thought to pure superstition.
3. Human experience or wisdom cannot discern the spirits.
4. Only the word of God will let us “Try the spirits.”
5. What then does God’s word teach us of THE HOLY GHOST?

I. THAT HE IS A DIVINE PERSON (JOH 14:16,17,26 AND 15:26)

1. He thus has a personality, thus never unpredictable acts.
2. He is one with equal with, and at one with the Father and the Son.
3. He was equally involved with them in creation.
4. He is equally involved in administration. (2Th. 2:7)
5. He is equally involved with them in salvation. (Joh 3:6)

II. HE HAS A SUCCESSFUL RELATIONSHIP WITH THE UNGODLY WORLD

1. He restrains not all, but all manner of evil. (2Th. 2:7)

III: By “God will not suffer you to be tempted”…

2. He convicts all wicked men of sin. (Joh 16:8Act 7:51)
3. He convicts of judgment, as in the case of Felix.
4. He convicts men of the righteousness of God.

III. HE MAKES THE GOSPEL EFFECTIVE

1. Without Him lost men could not understand it. (1Co 2:14)
2. How then does man receive truth unto repentance, faith?
3. It is by regeneration (Renewing), new birth, creation, resurrection

III: By Lydia whose heart God opened.

4. He is the person of God who calls effectively. (1Co 1:24)

III: By Him giving life to Lazarus when Jesus called.

IV. HE PERPETUALLY WORKS WITHIN THE REGENERATE

1. He seals them until the day of redemption. (Eph 1:13)
2. He endues us with power for His purpose. (Act 1:8)
3. He teaches us through the study of God’s word. (Joh 14:26)
4. He guides us beyond writ, but always according to it.
5. He bears witness with our witness. (Act 10:44)
6. He progressively sanctifies the believer. (Heb 9:14)
7. We are told to be filled with Him. Not “it.” How?
8. Not by seeking Him, for He is omni-present.
9. We do it by submitting to and obeying Him.
