385 – Power in the Blood

BIBLE INSTITUTE OF CORRESPONDENCE

COURSE: ECCLESIOLOGY VI (HYMNOLOGY) LESSON # 85
THE DOCTRINES AND EFFECTS OF CHURCH MUSIC – POWER IN THE BLOOD

Read: I Pet. 1:13-25

INTRODUCTION:

1. When natural men contemplate divine power, they at best, covet it. (Mat. 20:20-21)
2. At worst they imitate it or manipulate for it. (Acts 8:18-19)
3. Biblical revelation and right attitude is divine power over us. (Acts 9:6)
4. This great Bible basic is rightly understood and stated by this song writer.
5. Every verse speaks of some aspect of victory over our weak and wicked self.
6. Let these four scriptural verses of song constitute the points I shall try to make.
7. May it help us learn what worshipful music should be.

I. WE STRUGGLE WITH THE BURDEN OR BONDAGE OF SIN

“Would you be free from your burden of sin?”

1. Man always chooses his sinful practice for self-joy or profit. “Do it for yourself.”
2. He wills, and chooses, and acts according to his vile nature. (Eph. 2:2-3)

III: He sins because he is a sinner. What every man does, shows what he is.

3. By grace, divine light shows him what he is, and thus, his need of deliverance.
4. Then, Oh! how many schemes he peruses to extricate himself from his bondage.

III: By reform, baptism, religious conduct, good works, abstinence from evil works, yet he grows no better, but worse.

5. This song gives a totally different hope of freedom, the blood. (I Pet. 1:18)

II. THE POLLUTION OF SIN

“Would you be free from your passion and pride?”

1. Sin effects us with many symptoms, but in two basic divisions of bondage.

i. Judicial guilt.
ii. Moral pollution.

2. This verse addresses the moral pollution aspect. (Col. 1:14)
3. These words Passion and Pride address evil preferences and self- exaltation.
4. Oh, but how can I love what I naturally hate, and hate what I naturally love?
5. Better philosophy will not suffice. My soul must be renovated. The power for that is in the blood.

III. THE FILTH OF SIN

“Would you be whiter, much whiter than snow?”

1. The pollution and filth of sin may at first seem the same to you, but not quite.
2. Moral pollution within us is the cause, and filth upon us is the effect.

III: It was the passion and pride within the prodigal son that put him in the hog pen.

3. But there he was, imprisoned by the filth and deprivation rising out of his actions.

III: Sin is like quicksand, plush to the feel, and quiet, but deadly in the end.

4. But there is power in the blood for cleansing from this filth. (Rev. 1:5)

IV. FREED FROM BONDAGE TO DO LOVING SERVICE

“Would you do service for Jesus your King?”

1. Sin promises freedom and self-rule, but wields a lash of bondage (Satan’s slave).

III: This is seen in every brothel, bar, divorce court and prison in the world.

2. Conversely, the blood frees us to serve Christ willingly. (Rom. 6:18-23)

III: If I believed in Salvation by grace alone, I would sin all I wanted to.

3. Oh, I hope your heart is saying today, “I do not want that anymore.”
4. I want real cleansing, I want to see it in my life, and to feel it in my soul.
5. My friend, it is available, and it is only in the blood of Christ.
6. Will you not forsake every other hope and cast yourself on Him alone.
