390 – Take Time to be Holy

BIBLE INSTITUTE OF CORRESPONDENCE

COURSE: ECCLESIOLOGY VI (HYMNOLOGY) LESSON # 90
THE DOCTRINES AND EFFECTS OF CHURCH MUSIC – TAKE TIME TO BE HOLY

Read: Gen. 24:62-63

INTRODUCTION:

1. “Take time” is, in general, a rejected and resented philosophy in our day.
2. However, growth takes time, and it is no different spiritually. No spiritual steroids.
3. I remember that as a child I often heard the word meditate used by Christians.
4. Meditation is spending time in contemplation, soul-searching and communication.
5. Today, even Christian prayers must be loud and long to be thought right and worthy.
6. God is a Spirit, and neither sound, nor time, is relevant to His understanding.

III: By the little boy’s prayer, and “I was not talking to you.”

7. Our song writer here enjoins all of us to a most needed manner of life.

I. A POSITIVE PURSUIT OF HOLINESS (HEB. 12:14)

1. “Speak oft with thy Lord.” Three times a day is not enough. (I Thes. 5:17)
2. “Abide in Him always.” God is a Spirit and we can spiritually do so.

III: By the common statement, “Her whole life is tied up in him.”

3. “Feed on His word,” not for time points, but for food. Why do you read the Bible?
4. “Make friends of God’s children.” Fellowshipping and helping is good therapy.
5. Seek His blessing in all you do, and that, by seeking to do His will.

II. A DELIBERATE DETACHMENT FROM THE WORLD’S PROGRAM

1. The world rushes on, but you must hide away and “Waste a little time with God.”
2. By spending more time with Jesus, you will be more like Him. (II Cor. 3:18)
3. The result of this will be a “Lifestyle witness.” (I Pet. 3:1-2)

III: My greatest failure may be too little time in secret, with Jesus alone.

III. A DISCIPLINED WAITING ON THE LORD (ISA. 40:31)

1. “Let Him be thy guide.” That does not mean demanding instructions.

III: “Alright, I am ready to get with it, what do you want me to do?” (Hear on tape.)

2. Do not let bad circumstances move you from this practice, as it did Saul.
3. “In Joy and in Sorrow still follow thy Lord.” Trust His guidance. (Pro. 3:5-8)

IV. A QUIET TRUSTING IN HIS PROVIDENCE(MAT. 26:41)

1. We sometimes scream like a chastened and rebellious child adding to frustration.

III: By the child having been rightly spanked who needs calming and instructing.

2. Hear the loving Father say, “Alright now son, settle down and listen to me.”
3. Let His Spirit direct our thoughts and our motives. (Oh, how we need that!)
4. As this progressively takes place, we are fitted for eternal service. (Rom. 8:29)

III: Let my screaming to correct all that is wrong in the world around me, rest a moment, while I ask Him to correct all that is wrong within me.

5. Heaven is not so far in the future. Let us seek now to be conformed to His image.
