THE RESURRECTION OF JESUS  (THE REALITY OF IT)

Read Mat. 28:1-15Mk. 16:1-20Lk. 24:1-12Jn. 20:1-18 and Acts 17:31-32. Also read carefully MAJOR BIBLE EVENTS IN THE NEW TESTAMENT, lesson 27.

INTRODUCTION:

1. Nothing is more fundamental to Bible Christianity than the doctrine of Jesus’ bodily resurrection.
2. Conversely, nothing is more of a nightmare to those who reject Him as Lord and Savior.
3. In this study we shall try to view it under three biblical headings:

i. The Historical validity of the event
ii. The horrible implications of it to the unbeliever
iii. The fundamental value of it to the true Christian

I. THE HISTORICAL VALIDITY OF THE DOCTRINE OF CHRIST’S BODILY RESURRECTION

1. It is clearly a basic claim of every New Testament writer.
2. To deny it is to belie Christ and all His Apostles. (Luke 24:44-46Acts 1:20-221 Cor. 15:1-5)
3. Pilate sealed and guarded the tomb yet something happened to demand an explanation. (Mat. 27:62-66 and 28:9-15)
4. Even Jewish historians who do not believe felt compelled to explain His body’s disappearance.

II. THE HORRIBLE IMPLICATIONS OF HIS RESURRECTION TO THE UNBELIEVER

1. That unbelief in Jesus as the Christ motivated the murder of an innocent man. (Matt. 27:1-8)
2. That there is no way for anyone to rid themselves of this man’s existence. (Matt. 16:2127:62-6628:11-15)
3. That they must be judged by Him at their own resurrection. (Acts 17:30-31Rev. 1:11-18)
4. That He is eternal Jehovah just as He said He was.

III. THE FUNDAMENTAL IMPORTANCE OF HIS RESURRECTION TO THE CHRISTIAN FAITH

1. It proves His identity and deity. (Matt. 27:60-63John 2:13-22)
2. It proves the validity of all his promises. (Matt. 16:16-21Jn. 10:17,18Jn. 5:21-26)
3. It is the heart and validation of the gospel. (I Cor. 15:1-17)
4. It is the hope of future life for all who die in Christ. (I Cor. 15:18-26)
5. It is the perpetuation of the salvation of the saved. (Rom. 5:9,10Rom. 8:31-39)
6. It is the only hope for the eternal priesthood by which we are ultimately saved. (Heb. 7:19-28)
