1. All accounts of the inscription over our crucified Lord testify that it bore the word King.
2. Though the Jews denied Him, they used the term negatively, to accuse Him of attempted insurrection.
3. Pilate referred to Him as their king, and refused their request to change the “accusation.”
4. Let us consider several views of His kingly office.
I. THE NON-BIBLICAL VIEW OF MODERN RELIGION
1. We hear a lot of good sounding terms for this today.
i. Enthrone Him (make Him king) in your heart.
ii. Make Him the Lord of your life.
iii. Invite Him into your heart and life.
2. This is precisely the type of enthronement which Jesus refused in Jn. 6:15.
3. All of these things imply that we have a greater power, or control, in the given area, than He has.
III: You can only make someone king, if that someone, and the kingdom over which you place him, are under your control.
1. God has made Him king, thus, no man can either do it, or prevent it.
2. He is the Creator of all things, thus, the rightful owner, thus, the rightful king. (Rom. 11:36, Rev. 4:9-11)
3. Thus, we see that He is king by virtue of eternal decree of Him who sitteth up kings and putteth down kings.
III. THE EXTENT OF HIS KINGLY OFFICE (MAT. 28:19-20)
1. When Christ came into the world, John, in essence, proclaimed, “The king is coming.”
2. He came, and let us never suppose that He failed any purpose for which He came.
3. When this work was finished, He proclaimed in Mat. 28:19 and 20, all power (Greek exousia) (meaning and translated power-69, authority-29, right-2, liberty-1, jurisdiction-1, strength-1) is given unto me in heaven and in earth. What king could be greater than this?
4. Who shall either limit or exercise Him, but Almighty God, who, as concerning the flesh, He is.
5. There is no life, breath, man, nation, or world, who He does not hold in His hand.
6. He lets them live. He makes them live. He suffers them not to live. He suffers them not to die.
IV. THE NATURE OF HIS PRESENT KINGDOM
1. It is an invisible one (not of this world, yet over this world). (Jn. 18:36)
2. The kingdom is in the hearts of men, (Luke 17:21) yet is this not where the very issues of life abide?
3. It is a spiritual kingdom, which can neither be commanded nor forbidden by the most powerful man.
V. THE NATURE OF HIS FUTURE KINGDOM
1. It shall be a singular kingdom. That is to say, all others shall pass away. (Dan. 2:34-35, Dan. 2:44)
2. It shall be a universal kingdom. (Dan. 2:35)
3. It shall be an everlasting kingdom. (Dan. 2:44)
4. It shall be an absolute monarchy. (Ps. 2:7-9)
CONCLUSION: It is no wonder that Scripture declares Him to be “King of Kings and Lord of Lords.” (Rev. 19:16)
