360 – The Articles of Faith Concerning the Virgin Birth

BIBLE INSTITUTE OF CORRESPONDENCE

COURSE: ECCLESIOLOGY IV LESSON # 60
CHURCH COVENANT AND ARTICLES OF FAITH – ARTICLE OF FAITH CONCERNING THE VIRGIN BIRTH

Read: Matthew 1:18-25

INTRODUCTION:

1. Second only to resurrection is the miracle of His birth.
2. The Virgin Birth has long been under attack by doubters.
3. It is denied, basically, because of human impossibility.
4. Yet it is totally indispensable to the Christian faith.

III: By question which is most important, birth or death?

I. THE OLD TESTAMENT PROMISED THE VIRGIN BIRTH

1. It was promised by God Himself first. (Gen 3:15.)
2. It was graphically promised by Isaiah (Isa 7:14)

III: By the extreme accuracy of this prophesy

3. Some question this interpretation. Matthew settles the issue.
4. The entire Old Testament insists that He must be virgin birth.

II. THE NEW TESTAMENT STATES THAT IT OCCURRED

1. Every gospel writer refers to it in some way. (Mat 1:23Mar 1:1Luk 1:34-35Joh 1:14)
2. Every reference to the Son of God demands Virgin Birth.
3. The term “begotten” has been under fire for this reason.
4. Terms such as “Made of a woman” refer to Virgin Birth.

III. THE NECESSITY OF THE VIRGIN BIRTH OF CHRIST

1. We have testimony of legal conception in Mat 1:18-20.

III: By law against an illegitimate entering congregation.

2. The important issue was not His mother but His Father.
3. If conceived of a man, He was still of the first Adam.
4. He would thus be by inheritance a sinner. (Rom 5:19)
5. God thus chose to use the virgin, Mary, as His vehicle.

IV. THE VIRGIN BIRTH NOT ETERNAL VIRGINITY

1. The Bible never hints at Catholicism’s false claim.
2. It rather implies quite the opposite. (Mat 1:24-25)
3. Every social implication was of a normal marriage.
4. Existence of other children is unlikely and unnecessary.
5. Purification Luk 2:22, was likely conjugal. (Lev 12:2-4)

V. MARY IS NEVER TO BE WORSHIPED OF REVERENCED

1. Scripture plainly says God is the only proper object.
2. She was blessed, by God, among women. (Luk 1:42)
3. This was the privilege of being used by God, not of royalty.
(Luk 1:46-52)
4. Mary needed a savior just as you do. Is He your Savior?
5. Believing in the virgin birth will not save you only believing in the VIRGIN BORN.
