379 – The Mark of False Promises

COMMON MARKS OF FALSE RELIGION – THE MARK OF FALSE PROMISES

Read: Luke 9:57-62

INTRODUCTION:

1. I have spoken to you of both false prophets and false professors.
2. A common trait for both of these is false promises.
3. False promise through weakness and ignorance are in us all. (Mat. 26:33-35)
4. I speak of a superficial discipleship marked by perpetual lying.

I. A STRIKING CONTRAST

1. Veracity is a communicable and communicated attribute of God.
2. Veracity has always been a major, divine attribute.
3. God keeps every promise He makes. (I Kings 8:56)
4. Scripture describes Him as unable to lie. (Titus 1:2)
5. Conversely, false religion is marked by insincere and broken promises.
6. Herein are people impoverished, seduced, enslaved, and murdered.

II. WHAT ARE SOME THINGS THEY PROMISE?

1. Wealth is one of the favorite defraud tactics.

IIIs: By the multitude of schemes of today.

2. They promise fleshly gratification. (II Pet. 2:1-3)
3. They promise unpunished fleshly indulgence. (II Pet. 2:10-14)
4. They promise liberty. (II Pet. 2:15-19)
5. They promise life where God promises death. (Eze. 13:22)
6. False professors promise discipleship. (Luke 9:57)

III: By misuse of Romans 10:13 compared to I Corinthians 6:9-10)

III. THE RESULT OF FALSE PROMISES

1. The devastation and bondage of those beguiled thereby. (II Pet. 2:19)

III: By the liberty of the followers of Jones and Koresh.

2. It is often physical death to honest, but deceived people.

III: By the old prophet lying to the young one.

3. Often dishonest conspirators destroy each other. (Luke 22:3-6)
4. They shall always finally destroy themselves. (II Pet. 2:12)
5. The unrepentant liar, both prophet and professor, shall burn in hell. (Rev. 21:8)
6. Let every professor test his religion by his veracity.
