THE CRUCIFIXION OF JESUS CHRIST
Read Mat. 27:29-37, Mk. 15:15-26
INTRODUCTION:
1. The first advent of Christ, culminating in His crucifixion, burial, resurrection, and ascension, is the pivot of all history.
2. It is the foundation of the Christian faith, and central message of the gospel. (I Cor. 1:21-23
3. The human conduct involved in the crucifixion of Christ seems unbelievable, yet the event must be believed by every sinner who is ever to be saved.
4. Let’s now view this event from three perspectives:
i. The purpose of God.
ii. The work of Christ on the Cross.
iii. The conduct of the people who crucified Him.
I. THE PURPOSE OF GOD IN JESUS’ CRUCIFIXION
1. What took place here was sovereignly purposed by God in eternity past. (Acts 2:23
2. It was by this act that God chose to take away our sin. (Jn. 1:29
3. It was for this very purpose that God sent His Son into the world. (Rom. 8:3
4. God purposed to make Christ, become for us, all His holy law demanded of us. (I Cor. 1:30-31
II. THE WORK OF CHRIST ON THE CROSS
1. It was the essence and climax of doing the Father’s will. (Jn. 6:38-39
2. It was His actual and ultimate submission to that will. (Luke 22:50-54
3. It was the work of the high priest in making a perfect sacrifice. (Rom. 5:8
4. It was the fulfillment of all redemptive prophecy. (Matt. 1:21
5. It was the reconciliation of the elect to God. (Rom. 5:8-11
6. It was the purging away of our sins. (Jn. 1:29
7. It was the meritorious work of our redemption to God. (I Pet. 1:18-20
8. It was a work of great physical and psychological suffering. (Luke 22:41-44
9. It was personally substitutionary and vicarious. (I Pet. 3:18
III. THE CONDUCT OF PEOPLE WHO CRUCIFIED HIM
While God’s purpose was totally fulfilled in the death of Christ, let it be understood that the people who crucified Him, were exceedingly sinful in their actions. (Acts 2:23
1. They loved evil and hated good. (Jn. 3:19
2. They rejected known truth and sought falsehood. (Jn. 8:43-47
3. They betrayed and killed an innocent man. (Luke 23:4
4. They conspired to hide truth and have a known lie proclaimed. (Matt. 28:11-15
5. They willfully carried on the evil tradition of their forefathers, in persecuting God’s prophets. (Acts 7:51-53
6. They committed plain murder. (Acts 7:52
7. They brought the judgment of God upon their offspring. (Matt. 27:24-25
