THE DEATH AND BURIAL OF JESUS CHRIST

Read Mat. 27:50-61Mk. 15:33-47Lk. 23:44-56 and Jn. 19:31-42. Also, read carefully, MAJOR BIBLE EVENTS IN THE NEW TESTAMENT, lessons 25 and 26.

INTRODUCTION:

Paul teaches in I Cor. 15:1-4 that the essence of the gospel is the death, burial and resurrection of Christ. It is sad, but often we lump this all together without detail, and in doing so we miss much of its great teaching. In this lesson, let’s notice these very important events in their biblical setting.

I. THE DEATH OF CHRIST ON THE CROSS

1. The real significance of this event could never be understood without Heb. 10:1-10.
2. Paul, in both I Cor. 15:1-4 and Heb. 10:1-3, points us back to Lev. 16:15-16.
3. This, in turn, points in detail to Christ’s work on the cross.
4. Jesus offered up Himself for His people. (Matt. 1:21Heb. 10:10-14)

i. In Gethsemane, on his knees, to God. (Luke 22:39-44)
ii. On the way to and in His judgment. (Luke 22:50-54Jn. 19:9-11Isa. 53:6-8)
iii. On the cross. (Jn. 19:17Luke 23:46Jn. 10:17-18)

5. Jesus’ work on the cross fulfilled the type of Lev. 16:15-16.

II. THE RENDING OF THE VEIL IN THE TEMPLE

1. This event was not caused by the earthquake, but by the earth maker. (Heb. 9:11-12Heb. 10:19-20)
2. The veil (serving as a separating wall, but more particularly as a door of admittance) typified the body of our Lord.
3. When that body was broken for us (I Cor. 11:24) the veil was rent for us (Matt. 27:50-51.
4. When this was done the believer was given permanent and perpetual access to the presence of God. (Heb. 10:19-23)

III. THE BURIAL OF JESUS CHRIST

1. The burial of Christ is as significant as His death or His resurrection. (Matt. 12:38-40)
2. The great sign for that generation, and all ensuing generations, was to be the gospel message. (Mk. 16:14)
3. That message is Jesus’ three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.
4. This was signified by the scapegoat. (Lev. 16:20-22Jn. 1:29Rom. 6:1-11Heb. 9:27-28)

IV. THE TIME JESUS SPENT IN THE GRAVE

1. As usual religious tradition mauls and mangles truth, i.e., Ash Wednesday, Good Friday, etc.
2. Scripture reveals Jesus died on the day of the Passover. (Matt. 26:17-30)
3. It reveals that He was three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. (Matt. 12:38-40Jn. 2:18-19)
4. It is revealed that He arose sometime in the night of the first day of the week. (Matt. 28:1-7)
5. We know His death was on a day immediately before some Sabbath. (Mk. 15:37-46Luke 23:50-54Jn. 19:31-32)
6. The Sabbath of John 19:31, etc. was the first day of the feast of unleavened bread. (Ex. 12:6Ex. 12:14-20Lev. 23:1-8Num. 28:16-18)
7. Counting forward from the burial (Jn. 19:31-42) and backward from the first day of the week (Jn. 20:1-2Luke 24:1-2Mk. 16:1-2Matt. 28:1-2), you should arrive at the following.

i. In that year the Passover was on Tuesday night and Wednesday.
ii. The Sabbath i.e., first day of unleavened bread started Wednesday evening, Abib (April) the 15th. Jesus was crucified about 9:00 a.m. Wednesday.
iii. He was buried about 6:00 p.m. Wednesday, was resurrected about 6:00 p.m. Saturday and was discovered to be alive about dawn Sunday.
