SERMON ON THE MOUNT
HEARING THE WORDS OF JESUS
Read: Mat. 7:21-29
INTRODUCTION:
1. The word therefore in verse 24 ties this parable to verses 21-23.
2. The calamity of verses 21-23 is to be surprised by exclusion. (Pro. 29:1)
3. Our Lord says MANY will suffer this astonishing horror.
4. The parable that follows then is instruction in self-judgment.
5. What then are the elements of this right self-judgment?
I. LOCATING THE SOURCE OF SPIRITUAL INSTRUCTION (VERSE 24)
1. Following instructions has no virtue unless they are the right instructions.
2. Instructions for heaven’s entrance must come from heaven’s authority.
3. It is He and He alone who determines who enters and who does not.
i. He alone is the judge. (Joh. 5:22-27)
ii. He grants admission. (Mat. 25:22-23)
iii. He determines exclusion. (Mat. 13:41-42)
4. I cannot over emphasize “heareth these My sayings.”
II. REALIZING THE AUTHORITY OF JESUS’ INSTRUCTION (JOHN 8 :26
)
1. Many people make the fatal error of hearing His words objectively, and even critically.
III: How they discussed His teachings. (Joh. 10:19-21)
2. If you attempt to judge or scrutinize His words, you are not subjecting yourself as a hearer.
III: By the misunderstanding of “Ye have heard it said, but I say unto you.”
i. Wherever Jesus speaks, let us hear in quaking and reverent fear.
III: By “Red letter” a flashing red light. (Hear on tape.)
III. SEEING THE PURPOSE OF SPIRITUAL INSTRUCTION
1. How often men think there is some inherent virtue in knowing and acquiescing to truth!
III: By those taught here at Bethel, but now absent, yet thinking themselves somehow profited.
2. They may glory in doctrinal accuracy, but James warns them. (James 1:22-25)
3. Our text is very clear on this – heareth and doeth.
4. I ask: Are you a doer or just a hearer? Think!
5. If only a hearer, James says you are deceiving yourself. (James 1:22)
6. You shall be like this deceived group. (Mat.7 :22)
7. He cares not for what you volunteered to be and do, but what you are.
8. Do you hear His words, to do them? (Pro. 1:24-26)
