CHRIST’S WARNING TO FALSE PROFESSORS

Read: Mat. 7:21-23

INTRODUCTION:

1. As Christ warns us against false prophets, He warns us against being false professors.
2. Sad enough that a man go through life pursuing sin and go to hell.
3. Sadder yet if he pursues religion and perishes.
4. Yet that is the only kind of people who are being warned here.
5. Let us consider some Bible truths concerning false professions and delusive hopes.

I. NOT ALL PROFESSORS OF LIFE ARE POSSESSORS OF LIFE

1. Many think it wrong to question a professing Christian’s salvation. Jesus did!
2. We are taught there is no way to heaven except through Jesus Christ. (Acts 4:12 and Joh. 14:6)
3. He is also teaching that many who expect to get to heaven through Him will not.

III: By misuse of Romans 10:13: “You called on Him, you are saved.”

4. If many will thus fail, then we all should avoid presumption.

III: Lord is it I who shall betray you?

II. THE ONES WHO ENTER ARE THE DOERS OF GOD’S WILL

1. This teaching is not rare, but common in Scripture. (James 1:22-27)
2. John warns that those who claim love and live in disobedience, fool themselves. (I Joh. 2:3-4)
3. These principles are never perfect, but always present.

III. THEY WHO DO NOT ARE INSENSITIVE TO GOD’S WILL

1. They call Him Lord, but do not care about God’s will.
2. It includes all who profess Christ and live in disobedience.
3. It includes all who do not profess Christ and live in rebellion.

I. THIS IS NOT SALVATION BY WORKS, BUT IDENTITY BY WORKS

1. The teaching is not that works justify before God, but that they identify.

i. A grapevine bears grapes and a fig tree bears figs.
ii. A new creature in Christ seeks to obey God.
iii. The false professor lives in self-indulgence.

2. These false professors may think themselves quite obedient. (Mat. 7:22)
3. How do we know if our conduct is God’s will? It is the fruit of the Spirit. (Gal. 5:19-21)
4. Is your “Christianity” real or is it mere lip service?
5. Is your standard of right and wrong founded on self or the Bible?
6. Are you seeking to know and do God’s will, or only to get to heaven?
