430 – The Passover

BIBLE INSTITUTE OF CORRESPONDENCE

COURSE:  BIBLE SURVEY II LESSON # 30
THE PASSOVER

Read Ex. 11:4 through Ex. 13:6.

INTRODUCTION:

1. Two things are indispensable in rightly viewing the Passover:

i. That this Old Testament ordinance is symbolic. (Heb. 10:1-5)
ii. That this symbolism is pointing to the person and work of Christ. (Heb. 10:5-13)

2. Let all the plagues that preceded the death angel assure us that no experience of man, or display of God’s power will deliver from bondage. It takes the blood of the Lamb. (Heb. 10:14)
3. In the symbolism of the Passover and its result is every detail of the gospel.

I. THE POSITION OF GOD’S PEOPLE

1. Remember that by choice and promise these are God’s people, yet they are slaves. (Eph. 2:2-3)
2. They (as a people) are here by their own sin, volition and consent.
3. That which seemed practical and advantageous is proving to be enslaving and miserable.
4. They can now in no wise deliver themselves, only at this point can we see the true meaning of Gen. 50:19-26.

II. SYMBOLISMS OF THE LAMB (EX. 12:1-14)

1. The fullness of time (all else has been proven insufficient).
2. The qualification of the lamb (without spot or blemish).
3. The use of the lamb (eat the flesh and come under the blood).
4. The exclusiveness of the Lamb’s benefits. (Ex. 11:6-7Ex. 12:43-48)

i. This is a very good case for closed communion. (Ex. 12:3-4Ex. 12:21-22)

III. THE GOSPEL IN THE PASSOVER

1. The gospel is:

i. Christ’s death for our sins as the Bible describes it (in Old Testament types).
ii. His burial.
iii. His resurrection according to the Scriptures.

2. From the death of the Passover lamb to the victory song on the other side of the Red Sea, we see all of this.
3. Careful examination of the time, from the killing of the Passover lamb to the death of the Egyptians in the Red Sea, will give us the three days and three nights Jesus spent in the grave.
4. It is (in my opinion) precisely this of which Paul spoke in I Cor. 10:2.

IV. APPLICATION OF THE TYPES

1. Propitiation, in the blood of the lamb.

i. It was not the actions of those within, but the blood on the doorpost that stayed the death angel.
ii. Likewise, it is not the religious action of the Christian that sets the Christian apart, it is the sanctifying blood of Christ. (Heb. 10:10)

2. Those sanctified by the blood must leave Egypt.

i. The wrath of the world will not willingly suffer our sanctification, we must flee Egypt.
ii. It is by blood that we are spared from the wrath of God.
iii. But it is only by separation that we are spared from the bondage of the world.

3. Only those under the blood can have victory over the grave. (I Cor. 15:55)

i. The Red Sea typifies the grave, and the victorious emergence of Israel, the resurrection.
ii. All the preserving elements typify Christ, the blood, the cloud, the rock, etc.
iii. The Israelites were led by Moses (by faith, his not theirs) through the Red Sea. (Heb. 11:29)
iv. But the deliverance was not in the faith, but in the object of the faith. (Heb. 11:25-28)
v. Did the Egyptians not feel that if Israel could cross, they could? (Heb. 11:29) But they did not have the blood. (Rev. 12:11)
