SEMESTER 6
395 – Jesus Paid it All
BIBLE INSTITUTE OF CORRESPONDENCE
COURSE: ECCLESIOLOGY VI (HYMNOLOGY) LESSON # 95
THE DOCTRINES AND EFFECTS OF CHURCH MUSIC – JESUS PAID IT ALL
Read: Rom. 10:1-4
INTRODUCTION:
1. Never has a hymn title made a more biblical statement than this one does.
2. It does not merely magnify the payment, but declares it to be all in all.
3. It makes reference to the greatness of His saving power.
4. Finally, it speaks of salvation’s consummation and praises Him for that also.
I. IT DECLARES OUR WEAKNESS AND DEPENDENCY UPON HIM
“I hear the Savior say, “Thy strength indeed is small, Child of weakness, watch and pray, Find in Me thine all in.”
1. First the writer declares our inherent weakness. (Mat. 26:31-34
2. We are not only void of saving strength, but of staying strength. (Rom. 10:3
3. He has so emphatically stated, “Without me, ye can do nothing.” (Joh.15:5
III: How a little victory fills us with self and pride.
4. Even the promise of grace puffs up our evil hearts. (Luke 22:31-34
II. WHEN OUR WEAKNESS IS REALIZED SO IS HIS STRENGTH
“Lord, now indeed I find Thy power, and Thine alone, Can change the leper’s spots, And melt the heart of stone.”
1. Perhaps the greatest paradox is that strength is found in weakness. (II Cor. 12:7-9
IIIs: By the little boy who after one nail said, “I am the best nail knocker in the world.” (Hear on tape.)
2. But it is His power, and His alone, which can break and cleanse us as we should be.
3. The epitome of false religion is the philosophy of a combination justification.
III: Jesus has done so very much, but it all equals nothing, if I do not do my part.
4. This great truth does not negate human responsibility, but it makes it executable.
III. GRACE IS NOT ATTAINED, IT IS BESTOWED FREELY
“For nothing good have I Where-by Thy grace to claim – I’ll wash my garments white in the blood of Calvary’s Lamb.”
1. Human error will embrace Grace, but only on the basis of some goodness.
2. The song writer says, I have no claim, nor any way to lay hold on grace.
III: Paul says we are justified freely by grace (without a cause). (Rom. 3:24
3. Error always wants “By His Blood” and “By faith” to be seen as a combination.
4. The same grace that gave the blood calls us, and gives us saving faith.
IV. WHEN WE ARE GLORIFIED, WE MUST ALSO CREDIT THAT TO HIM
“And when, before the throne, I stand in Him complete, Jesus died my soul to save, My lips shall still repeat.”
1. The world’s religions all say, “I gotta make it to heaven somehow.”
2. Scripture says we are now sons and glorification is absolutely certain. (I Joh. 3:1-2
3. The song writer says, then I will still repeat this glorious statement of praise.
4. It is not a “white knuckle,” “Whew, I am glad I made it through,” experience.
5. He does not say, if I stand complete, but when I stand in Him complete.
6. How can anyone really be sure of heaven? Precisely the words of this chorus: “Jesus paid it all, all to Him I owe; Sin had left a crimson stain He washed it white as snow.”
7. I ask you now, “What is your hope of heaven? Will you not abandon all else and come?
