SEMESTER 6
293 – Doing the Sayings of Jesus
BIBLE INSTITUTE OF CORRESPONDENCE
COURSE: SOTERIOLOGY VI LESSON # 93
SERMON ON THE MOUNT
DOING THE SAYINGS OF JESUS
Read: Mat. 7:21-28
INTRODUCTION:
1. The last part of lesson 28 taught that instruction was unto conduct, not mere knowledge.
2. The direction of this lesson is the definition and importance of “doing them.”
3. Nowhere is there more bad judgment than in analyzing our own conduct. (Pro. 20:6
III: By the self-appraisal of the rich young ruler. “From my youth up.”
I. RIGHT DOING IS ACCORDING TO THESE SAYINGS OF JESUS
1. The world entertains great variation and contradiction in defining “right.”
III: I must do what is “right for me.” (What I approve of.)
2. This is the voice of practical, if not theoretic atheism.
3. By all that is in man, he does not know love or hate, good or evil. (Ecc. 9:1
4. The greatest advice ever given by a woman is in John 2:5
II. WISDOM IS IN OBEDIENCE NOT MERE UNDERSTANDING (VERSE 26)
1. A common religious error is that good intention somehow equals good conduct.
III: “The road to hell is paved with good intentions.”
2. Too many people simply amuse or immunize themselves each Sunday morning by hearing.
3. But they, like the Hebrews of Jeremiah’s day, “will not do them.”
4. This truth is well illustrated by those who relegate the Sermon on the Mount to another age.
5. Men should rather be studying this discourse, and seeking to live accordingly.
III. THIS “DOING” IS AN ACTIVITY NOT AN ACCOMPLISHMENT
1. The conduct of Romans 10:1
2. So is that of the accusation of Romans 10:1
3. The right conduct is that of Hebrews 12:1
4. This is perfectly illustrated by Philippians 13:12
IV. WHOSE DEFINITION OF WISDOM WILL WE ACCEPT?
1. The secular humanist says, “Do what you do for yourself.”
2. To them, all good is a mere profitable “trade-off.”
3. The self-styled religionist sets his own standards, and joys in that he walks accordingly.
4. Christ’s standard is seek first the kingdom of God, constantly hear His words and do them.
5. Are you a wise man or a foolish one?
6. This will tell your future here and hereafter.
