1. I read the only occurrence of the word atonement in the N.T.
2. I suppose few doctrines are less studied or understood.
3. Once atonement was expounded by all Baptist preachers.
4. Today the word is used often, but the doctrine avoided.
I. FIRST SEE THE DEFINITION OF THE WORD
1. Greek Kat al la’ ge is translated once atonement, twice reconciliation, and three times reconciling.
2. Verb form Kat al la’ so is translated six times reconciling.
3. So you must never mean less or more than that by this word.
4. When an atonement is made the object of it is reconciled.
1. The word full here is to state absolute completeness.
III: By my earlier error “You must apply the blood.”
2. The atonement is vicarious, i.e., it is done by another.
3. This means we neither do it or participate. (2Pe 2:24)
III: By the error, No effect until you engage it.
4. Arminianism just insists on performing part of salvation.
III. ATONEMENT THROUGH TWO MEDIATORIAL OFFICES
1. The first part of atonement is oblation. (Rev 1:5)
2. This means that He shed His blood for us. (Heb 10:10)
III: By the first part of the priest’s work of atonement.
3. He then, as a mediator, offers the blood. (Heb 9:12)
III: By Mary Magdalene, and “Touch Me not…”
4. Now, in His high priestly position, He intercedes for us.
IV. ATONEMENT IS PERSONALLY SUBSTITUTIONARY.
1. Men today say “Personal Savior”, who do not believe it.
III: “God would be as glorified if no sinner were saved.”
2. The Bible teaches He always had a people in mind. (Mat 1:21 and Joh 6:37)
3. It teaches He travailed in birth for them. (Isa 53:11)
4. Let us take nothing from the hypothetical value of it.
5. But let us not substitute that for the actual atonement.
6. Are you satisfied with what He did for you, or do you feel the need to do something more?
